Why Dandruff Gets Worse in Winter, and How a Salon Treatment Fixes It

Why Dandruff Gets Worse in Winter, and How a Salon Treatment Fixes It

If your dandruff seems to come back every November, you are not imagining it. For many people, flaking and itching get noticeably worse in winter, and the usual fixes (more oil, hotter showers, washing less) can actually make it worse. Here is why it happens, what helps at home, and when a salon treatment is worth it.

First, is it dandruff or a dry scalp?

The two look similar but need different care.

Dry scalpDandruff
FlakesSmall, white, powderyLarger, often yellowish or slightly oily
Scalp feelsTight and dryItchy, sometimes oily
Rest of your skinOften dry tooCan be oily around the nose and eyebrows
Helped byMoisture, gentler washing, less hot waterAnti-dandruff ingredients and regular washing

Many people have a bit of both in winter: a scalp that is dry from the weather and hot water, with dandruff on top.

Why dandruff flares up in winter

  • A yeast that loves scalp oil. Dandruff is closely linked to a yeast called Malassezia that lives on everyone's scalp and feeds on its oil. When it overgrows, the scalp reacts by shedding skin faster, and you see flakes.
  • Washing less. In the cold we wash our hair less often. Oil, dead skin and (in Delhi) pollution build up, which is exactly what that yeast likes.
  • Hot showers. Very hot water dries and irritates the scalp, making itching and flaking worse.
  • Heavy oiling. Leaving lots of oil on the scalp for days can feed dandruff rather than calm it. Oil the lengths, not the scalp, if you are flaky.
  • Caps and woollens. Warm, covered, sweaty scalps are happy places for yeast.
  • Stress and dry indoor air also play a part for many people.

What helps at home

Use a real anti-dandruff shampoo

Look for one of these on the label: zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, selenium sulphide, salicylic acid or piroctone olamine. Massage it into the scalp and leave the lather on for three to five minutes before rinsing; it needs time to work.

Wash regularly with lukewarm water

Two to three times a week keeps oil and flakes from building up. Lukewarm water cleans just as well as hot water without drying the scalp.

Condition the lengths, not the scalp

Your hair still needs conditioner in winter, but keep it on the mid-lengths and ends.

Do not scratch

Scratching breaks the skin and makes the itching and flaking worse. Gently massage instead when you wash.

Keep combs and pillow covers clean

Wash them weekly during a flare-up.

How the salon treatment works

Anti-dandruff scalp treatment at the salon
Biolage anti-dandruff treatment at Coolcut.

When home care is not enough, or you want a proper reset, our anti-dandruff treatment uses the Biolage anti-dandruff range. In a typical session:

  1. The stylist checks your scalp to see whether it is dry, oily or both.
  2. The scalp is cleansed to clear flakes, oil and product build-up.
  3. A Biolage anti-dandruff treatment is massaged into the scalp and left to work.
  4. It is rinsed out and the hair is conditioned and dried.

Most people feel the difference straight away: a calmer, less itchy scalp and a lot fewer flakes. For a stubborn winter flare-up, two or three sessions a few weeks apart, plus the right shampoo at home, works best.

At Coolcut: Biolage anti-dandruff treatment is ₹800 for women and ₹500 for men. Prices at Rohini Sector 13, Rohini Sector 9, Vikaspuri and Munirka; Paschim Vihar prices may differ.

When to see a dermatologist

See a doctor if your scalp is red, sore, bleeding or weeping, if the flaking spreads to your face, ears or body, if you are losing hair in patches, or if nothing helps after a month of anti-dandruff shampoo. Conditions like seborrhoeic dermatitis, psoriasis and fungal infections can look like dandruff and need medical treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Can dandruff cause hair fall?

Dandruff itself does not usually cause hair loss, but constant scratching and an inflamed scalp can make hair fall and breakage worse. Treating the dandruff calms things down.

Is oiling good for dandruff?

Generally not on the scalp. Oil can feed the yeast linked to dandruff. If you love oiling, keep it to the lengths and wash it out the same day.

Will a hair spa help dandruff?

A hair spa is about moisture and softness for the hair; for flaking, the anti-dandruff treatment is the right choice. Many people do one now and the other a few weeks later.

Do men get dandruff more than women?

Dandruff is common in both. Men often notice it more on short, dark hair and on dark clothes. The same treatment works for both.
