Delhi Smog Season Hair Care: Protecting Your Hair and Scalp This Winter

Delhi Smog Season Hair Care: Protecting Your Hair and Scalp This Winter

Every winter, Delhi's air quality drops, the sky turns grey, and many of us notice the same thing in the mirror: hair that feels rough and dull, a scalp that itches, and more strands in the comb. The smog season is hard on hair. The good news is that a few simple habits, plus the right salon treatment at the right time, make a real difference.

What smog and winter do to your hair

Pollution settles on the scalp

Fine dust and smoke particles (the PM2.5 and PM10 you see on the air-quality apps) do not just stay in the air. They settle on your hair and scalp along with sweat and natural oil, building a grimy layer that can block the scalp, make it itch and leave hair looking flat and lifeless.

Dry air and hot water

Cold, dry winter air pulls moisture out of the hair. Then we make it worse with long, hot showers, which strip the scalp's natural oils. The result: dry, brittle lengths and, often, a flaky scalp.

Hard water

Much of Delhi has hard water. Its minerals leave a film on the hair that makes it feel stiff and dull and stops conditioners working properly.

When the AQI climbs, your hair and scalp are exposed every time you step out.

A smog-season routine that works

1. Cover up outdoors

A scarf, dupatta or cap on high-AQI days keeps a lot of dust off your hair. If your hair is long, tie it in a loose braid or bun when you are out so less of it is exposed.

2. Wash more regularly, but gently

Do not let pollution sit on your scalp for a week. Wash two to three times a week with a mild shampoo and lukewarm, not hot, water. Shampoo the scalp, not the lengths, and let the rinse clean the lengths.

3. Condition every time

Conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends after every wash, rinsed with cooler water, keeps the hair smooth and closes the cuticle so it shines.

4. Oil before washing, not after

A warm oil massage an hour before you wash nourishes the lengths and helps lift grime off the scalp. Avoid leaving heavy oil on the scalp for days: on a polluted day, oily hair attracts even more dust.

5. Go easy on heat

Dry air plus straighteners and blow-dryers on high heat is a recipe for breakage. Let hair air-dry where you can and use a heat protectant when you cannot.

6. Eat and drink for your hair

Seasonal fruit and vegetables, enough protein, and plenty of water (yes, even in winter) all show up in your hair over time.

Salon treatments for smog season

Hair spa treatment at the basin
A hair spa deep-cleans and puts moisture back into dry winter hair.

L'Oréal hair spa, every 3 to 4 weeks

A hair spa is the most useful single thing you can book this season. The hair is cleansed, a L'Oréal spa cream is massaged in, and the scalp massage boosts circulation. For dry, coloured or smoothened hair, add an ampoule for an extra dose of care.

At Coolcut: L'Oréal hair spa ₹700 for women, ₹400 for men. With ampoule: ₹1,000 / ₹600. Hair repair treatment: ₹900 / ₹600.

Anti-dandruff treatment if your scalp is flaking

If the itching has turned into flakes, a Biolage anti-dandruff treatment (₹800 for women, ₹500 for men) treats the scalp itself. We explain why dandruff flares up in winter in this guide.

Hair repair for damaged lengths

If your hair is smoothened, coloured or highlighted and feels like straw by December, a hair repair treatment targets the damaged lengths.

When to see a doctor

Some extra shedding in winter is common. But if your hair is coming out in clumps, you see bald patches, or your scalp is red, sore or weeping, see a dermatologist. Hair loss can also come from thyroid problems, low iron, stress or hormones, and those need a doctor, not a salon.

Frequently asked questions

Does pollution really cause hair fall?

Pollution on its own is rarely the only cause, but a dirty, irritated scalp and dry, brittle hair both make hair fall and breakage worse. Keeping the scalp clean and the hair moisturised helps.

How often should I wash my hair in Delhi's winter?

Two to three times a week suits most people. If you are outdoors a lot or have an oily scalp, you may need more; use a mild shampoo so frequent washing does not dry you out.

Is oiling good in winter?

Yes, for the lengths, as a pre-wash treatment. Just do not leave heavy oil on the scalp for days in polluted air.
